A newcomer’s case for Juliette Low’s children-first legacy on Gwinnett Street

For weeks Hollywood turned our blocks into a backlot: orange cones, semitrailers and crane trucks — the same vehicles again and again — pop-up tents rigged with low-grade filming equipment, crew and staff walking in and out without making eye contact with anyone who actually lives here. At first I thought they were here for telephone crews: poles, lines, the ordinary mask of utility work. Then I noticed everyone taking pictures with their cameras, posting those pictures online, fawning over photos of the camera cranes as if the neighborhood had become a magical wonderland — a wonderland made of trailers and repeating rigs. I saw a subsidized occupation and felt the opposite.

The cones and trucks did not stop children from playing around the rigs; daily life mostly continued. The wound was ethics — a children-first neighborhood used as a free set on taxpayer-backed police overtime and permits, celebrated online, with no consent form we ever signed, no posted community ledger, and almost none of the industry money routed into homework hours, park programming, or anything visible for the kids who live here year-round. Much of the spectacle sat on **Shuman Elementary’s** green and the **Goebel Avenue / E Gwinnett** corridor — the same child-scale block the district was emptying out.

In **May 2026** I said so in the private **Gordonston on Facebook** group (volunteer admins; not the **GNA**). A neighbor had replied in the thread; I was still writing my answer when an admin **deleted my post** about taxpayer-backed filming — **before I could finish that reply**. After that I was shut out of **that thread only**: I could still open the group, but **I could no longer see the conversation** (the thread had been up for some time; Facebook may have been **hiding** it rather than showing a clean “removed” state — I still call that a **thread ban**; the precise label may be that the admin **removed my visibility from the thread**). When I **posted about that**, I was **removed from the whole group**.

**Jack Taylor** is the only person I name from that episode. He is the exception, not a blame ledger for every volunteer: he **posted the public admin statement** in the group (**May 2026**, comments later turned off), described **deleting** the filming complaint and **removing** me, and is the **identifiable actor** on the record — not an unnamed “mods did it.” His post cites group rules (**no personal attacks, no politics**) and classifies my filming post as **politics**; his own note admits my follow-up was me **complaining about being banned** — not attacking anyone. Through removal I had **not** personally attacked a neighbor; I had **not** replied to anyone except to report the ban and **speculate who removed me** (he calls that blaming the “reply person”). **After** I was out I still had not attacked or answered anyone in the group. Invoking **“no personal attacks”** against that record mislabels the complainant as the attacker. he reframes my removal as **“Your choice”** after I said I was leaving — but **“bye, I’m leaving”** was my response to **unsanctioned censorship**, not a clean voluntary exit. The ban included **deleting all my posts** in the group and **barring me from returning** after I left; that is **ban geometry**, not choosing to walk away while my history stays up. I read his framing as **disingenuous** — cute wording for delete, purge, ejection, and no return. He also implies the group is a **volunteer** channel with nothing to debate; in practice **Gordonston on Facebook** is not named for one program, has **no posted rules** limiting who or what belongs, and is used by **many lanes** — including a **cat rescue** group and other neighbor efforts I was already in. Removing me over Hollywood was not a thread-level fix; it **cut me off** from that whole surface. I am **cut off** now. That is why I treat this censorship as rhyming with **violence** — not punches, but **ejection from shared infrastructure** you were using for unrelated community work, with no return path. I had named a moral mismatch — spectacle subsidized by the public, silence for residents who object — and the group treated that as **politics** I was not allowed to speak. The geometry is industry-wide: I call it the **silver platter** — a curated surface that celebrates the spectacle, removes the edge complaint instead of answering it, and hands the block to traveling industry on public subsidy. ## MGGA? That sounds political

**Make Gordonston Great Again** is wordplay on neglect, not an endorsement of any national campaign. I moved here about four years ago. I am disappointed that a place with a worldwide legacy for children does not offer today’s children the open, practical version of that inheritance — even though the buildings and acreage are still here.

This is a neighborhood restoration argument: Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts, “Savannah’s children” in the press at mid-century, and a streetcar suburb that marketed itself around youth from the start. I am looking for a path forward. Sometimes that means naming an unreasonable blocker — someone who will not meet, negotiate, or acknowledge that the present arrangement hurts kids — without turning the essay into a blame ledger.

## The Gwinnett corridor today

**E Gwinnett Street** is where **Twickenham** and **Gordonston** meet. North of Gwinnett, **Shuman Elementary School** (**415 Goebel Avenue**, Savannah-Chatham County public schools) was the walkable neighborhood elementary — grades **1–5**, a large building and green field facing the church block. South of Gwinnett, **Christ’s Community Church** at **1805 E. Gwinnett St.** is a separate institution: a **~1957** **Morningside Baptist** campus scaled for hundreds of children (**~1,200** seats in secondary sources), with an education wing that still reads like a school from the sidewalk. It was never SCCPSS; maps sometimes mislabel buildings on this corridor. On weekdays that wing is mostly idle while a modest congregation uses Sunday morning, Wednesday evening, and scattered small groups.

Shuman is **permanently closed** as a traditional neighborhood school and **will not reopen** to its previous student body. The district held a public hearing on the closure in **2025** ([SCCPSS BoardDocs — Shuman Elementary](https://go.boarddocs.com/ga/sccs/Board.nsf/goto?id=DH5GUL458481&open=)); students were reassigned elsewhere. Before closure, public test snapshots placed Shuman among **low-proficiency** Savannah elementaries — for example [**Niche**](https://www.niche.com/k12/shuman-elementary-school-savannah-ga/) cites **2023–24** Georgia Milestones at roughly **25%** reading and **30%** math proficient (**S** aggregator; district-wide accountability in dossier **R10–R11**). **Most families who used to send children up the block to Goebel now travel farther from home** — bus or car to replacement campuses, not a walk-to-class morning.

Near Gwinnett today the shock is local: **closed Shuman**, **idle church classrooms**, locked **Juliette Gordon Low Park** — a triple vacancy on Low’s charter while reassigned public-school kids and homeschool cohorts still need help their parents cannot always give after work and after the longer ride home.

## The park I met — and the park I see now

Four years ago I could walk children toward the park without planning around a lock schedule. Now I plan around absence. When a gate does open, it is often a single entry point, which turns a seven-acre gift into a funnel. Equipment rusts; surfaces crack; the message to every parent on either side of Gwinnett is that this asset is for adults who already won a feud, not for kids who need a daily place to move.

Renovation is not vanity. It is infrastructure for reconciliation: Twickenham and Gordonston children on the same grass under posted rules, with volunteers who count heads and trustees who publish hours instead of leaving access to rumor. I want that park to look like the Gordonston I thought I was joining — the one Art Fair posters still advertise to the city — open on ordinary afternoons for children.

## How Gordonston was built — and what we lost on the way

The present fight has roots in **1917** and a feud that never closed.

Gordonston’s name still travels the planet because of children. Low’s will funded park upkeep in **1924**; the park was dedicated in **1926** and conveyed to trustees in **1928**. Press at the **1948** dedication of the Mary Calder Cottage spoke of a park for Savannah’s children, not a walled garden for deed lawyers. Through the **1950s** and **1960s** Brownies and troops camped at scale.

William Washington Gordon III and his siblings marketed an **80-acre** tract in **1917** on some of Savannah’s highest ground, tied to the family that helped build the Central of Georgia Railroad. Gordonston became a **streetcar suburb** on the Thunderbolt line; the line is gone, but the oaks and the **1920s–1950s** housing fabric remain. The National Register listed the district in **2001** — the same era **“No trespassing. Residents Only”** signs went up at park gates after night trespass, with police advising that warnings create legal grounds to remove people.

Low’s **1928** deed language gives trustees **“full power and discretion”** over rules for maintenance. In October **2011** the *Savannah Morning News* documented a feud that still defines trust on Gwinnett: Gordonston residents and park trustees insisting the gift was for **Gordonston property owners**, Twickenham and other outsiders citing Low’s broader children’s framing and decades of public use, a flashpoint at the iron gate with dog walkers and police called, an attorney letter over a **GNA Facebook** post, talk of off-duty police, and an offer of roughly **$100 per year** plus volunteer labor from a Twickenham advocate that trustees declined as precedent.

Parallel track: Twickenham residents challenged the park’s **charitable property-tax exemption**. Chatham County Tax Assessor staff told the reporter the ~seven-acre exemption **never qualified**; the Board of Assessors **could** remove it. The whole thing was **never really resolved** — it was simply **ended**, most likely because **Twickenham and Gordonston** could not afford the **legal fees** it would have taken to carry the assessor fight or a trust challenge through to a clear win. What lingered was **Residents Only** and no durable written access policy, not a courthouse victory for anyone. A stronger documented case today might read differently; I hope we never need that adversarial lane. **2012** brought a Girl Scout centennial tree planting; the **Gordonston Art Fair** and other invited events continued in later years. The structural tension with **Residents Only** never received a durable written public-access policy.

## Twickenham’s children

I watch how access, signage, and enforcement land at that border and I see Black children and white children sorted by geography and gate policy at our doorstep — Twickenham on one side, Gordonston on the other, the feud still breathing in **2026** even when nobody prints the old headlines. The **2011** press framed a property fight; the lived street is sharper than plat maps. I state that as my read; the dossier keeps the audit trail and does not treat racist intent as proven fact.

My opinion, watching from Gordonston: the children of **Twickenham** have become **isolated** in a way their parents’ generation did not plan for. They were **banished** from Gordonston’s park culture — pushed back at the iron gate, told to petition, threatened with police — and now **Shuman is gone forever** as the walkable school they grew up expecting. What they knew growing up is no longer: the same field, the same park path, the same morning walk to Goebel. The feud did not end in **2011**; it hardened into empty buildings and longer bus rides. That is why the homework vision explicitly welcomes Twickenham in the free zone — not as a concession to outsiders, but as repair for children who were cut off from a legacy that was never supposed to be Gordonston-only.

I do not mean every Savannah school is in free fall: **57%** of district schools met or exceeded the state on at least one CCRPI component in **2025**, and four schools earned statewide growth or performance awards that spring — but the baseline strain on ordinary blocks is real. A volunteer study hall on Gwinnett is not a replacement for Shuman; it is extra help after the bus ride, when district scores and longer commutes already say the neighborhood is under-serving its children.

## A volunteer homework campus — and a park children can use again

**Christ’s Community Church** publishes a light weekday calendar — most Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday daytime hours have no scheduled worship; Wednesday daytime is open before evening Bible study; Saturday has morning slots outside women’s and men’s groups. The ask is modest: permission to open **a few classrooms** and a **large-screen TV** room on agreed days for a supervised study hall. Sunday worship stays untouched.

The campus descends from **Morningside Baptist** — congregational Baptist life on Gwinnett, in the same broad family as **Southern Baptist Convention (SBC)** churches: local church governance, shared confession, and worship that stays central while weekday rooms can serve the neighborhood. This plan must be **100% compatible** with that: **secular homework help only** (reading, writing, math, the assignments children already carry from home or public school). Volunteers need literacy and patience, a **GED-level** baseline in plain English, and willingness to pass church background expectations. They do not need to be certified teachers. Technology is the equalizer: curriculum-aligned videos, demonstration tools for math, search and agentic lookup to match the textbook edition the child actually uses. The volunteer walks the student through the work — one subject at a time for the group when several share a topic — and **automatic homework completion is not tolerated**. Cheating voids the point.

The pilot does **not** replace Shuman or open a second public school — it is a **volunteer study hall** for homeschool families and for public-school students who already **commute farther** after reassignment and still need help after the bus ride home. Cost is **free** for **Gordonston**, **Twickenham**, and nearby adjoining blocks. That scale is the proof the campus knows how to carry youth when leadership chooses to. When studios no longer need Gordonston as a bargain set, the neighborhood will still need trustees who unlock gates, a **GNA** that treats Twickenham as partner geography, and a church board willing to let empty classrooms breathe on Tuesday afternoon. Fixing Gordonston is coalition work on Gwinnett: church permission, trustee policy, volunteer bench, assessor transparency if cooperation fails. The art fair can stay a showcase; it should not be the only weekend children see the park unlocked while weekdays stay chained.
