## What was it?

The Philadelphia Experiment was an attempt to use **high-amplitude** energy to create a **cloaking** device. While it functioned, the ship did not just disappear — it was sent **somewhere else**. **Not** another dimension. **Not** another time, nor another universe. Instead, it was sent **somewhere locally** — **Norfolk, Virginia**. When the experimental ship device was shut off, humans were frozen into the ship's hull. Some went insane. Some caught on fire and could not be put out. No one turned permanently invisible. **No one time traveled.**

> Purportedly, some men aboard the SS Andrew Furuseth saw a ship spontaneously appear in the water in Norfolk on October 28th. The story goes that it came from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The destroyer had first disappeared and then it instantaneously teleported to Norfolk. The disappearance and the teleportation were apparently two different functions of the experiment. In other words, the disappearance was not the result of the teleportation, but rather came before it. Once the USS Eldridge reached Norfolk, it was clear something went wrong. Some of the men had disappeared during the trip. Others had gone mad. Some kept becoming invisible and then regaining their forms. Others still had become fused — yes, fused — with the ship in various ways.

### Allende letters — the detail-rich layer

The **most complete** surviving narrative is **Carl Meredith Allen** ("**Carlos Miguel Allende**") writing to UFO researcher **Morris K. Jessup** (**1955–1956**). [David Halperin](https://www.davidhalperin.net/the-philadelphia-experiment-the-allende-mystery/) preserves the key passages:

- An **oblate spheroid field** (~100 yards) made crew **"vague in form"** — **heat-mirage** limbs, **walking upon nothing** inside the bubble.
- **"Going Blank"** could feel **pleasant**; **"Getting Stuck"** = **"Hell Incorporated"** / **Deep Freeze** — semi-comatose **nether world**, unaware of ordinary time.
- **Cure:** **two or more** crew **lay hands** on a frozen man **quickly** — else he **freezes** deeper. Bystanders near the **Philadelphia Navy Yard** were told to **join** if they saw **wavering** digits.
- **Failure mode:** men **"Went into The Flame"** — **froze and caught fire** (once while carrying **compasses**); another burned **18 days** during **hand-laying**; **"The faith in Hand Laying Died."**
- **"The experiment Was a Complete Success. The Men were Complete Failures."**

**Project read:** **Space** jump **Philadelphia ↔ Norfolk** until the device **off**; **retained energy** in bodies afterward — **not** chronology travel. I used to have entire articles and news clippings on this topic — the real version, not the sci-fi CO version. I can't find anything on it anymore. If anyone has anything, send it my way.
